Santiago Huerta, Spanish architect. He practiced the profession until 1988 when he obtained his PhD with his thesis awarded with the Extraordinary Prize of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), when he began as a professor at the Higher Technical School of Architecture (ETSAM) in the UPM, with the chair of Structural Design. From 1992 to the present, he has been a consultant for numerous historical buildings such as the cathedrals of Palma de Mallorca, Tudela and Santiago de Compostela; several medieval bridges, among others.
From 1995 to the present, he is the director of publications of the Juan de Herrera Institute, and editor of the series: «Textos sobre Teoría e Historia de la Construcción», with books of classics such as those by Viollet-le-Duc, Choisy or Perronet; and from modern authors like Heyman.
Since 1997, he is co-founder of the Spanish Society of Construction History, and from 2003 he is president until today. From this society, he has organized the National and International Congresses of Construction History, in several countries, counting to the present with fifteen editions. In 2007 he created the Master's Degree in Building Structures at UPM, of which he was director. From 2008 to 2010 he was vice director of the Department of Structures at ETSAM. In 2003 he won the Culture Award from the Madrid Institution of Architects for the book: Las bóvedas de Guastavino in America (Guastavino vaults in America). In 2010, he was awarded the Telford Medal from the United Kingdom Institution of Civil Engineers.
He has been a guest speaker at numerous international events, and has been a member of various scientific committees. He has more than one hundred scientific publications with the highest impact indexes, through research on topics related to vaulted architecture, structural theory, and on construction history. In 2004 he published a book that summarizes his research activity, with the title: Arcos, Bóvedas y Cúpulas (Arches, vaults and domes).
