George Smith

George P. Smith received his Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Haverford College in 1963 and his Ph.D. in bacteriology and immunology from Harvard University in 1970. From 1970 to 1975 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin in the laboratory of Oliver Smithies, who shared the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Smith then served as Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Missouri in Columbia from 1975 until his retirement in 2015. In 2018 he shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Greg Winter and Frances Arnold, for his work in developing phage-display technology.
